This is a quilt i started years ago, left it to find a border....well on my table of fabrics to be washed and put away i am finding quilts mixed in with them ...this is one of them....on top of it is what i think i will use as a border for the quilt....hard to tell but the pattern is courthouse steps and the blocks are a mix of the colors shown I call it Jungle quilt....before i get back to that i am trying to get all the fabrics washed up and put in my ... read more

Very interesting!

I like the middle part, but I think would lighten the outer blocks.

Interesting!

It is now a toss up between the one above, and the first one, which one I like the most.

Perhaps the last one is my choice for the day.

That is all the Log Cabin designs for this week … more mid week, next week.
read moreI'm always the first one up in the house and most mornings that gets to be my time...to walk Ned first and then go back out alone with my camera, sit by the pond, fingers and toes crossed that some special bird or other critter will appear just for me. That is also my time to mentally count my blessings. That bit makes me think of the lines of the old hymn...Count your blessings, name them one by one, and then it will surprise you what the Lord has done. Anybody else sing that when young?? I ...

Exciting. Certainly more exciting than the average Log Cabin quilts I have seen anywhere.

A bit more mundane.

Another exciting design.

Interesting design above.

Another very interesting design to complete this weeks collection of Log Cabin quilt designs.

More Log Cabin designs mid week, next week.
Now I have to make sure I get this posted in the middle of the week, and I have checked the day and date three times so far to make sure I get it right.
read moreI step out on the veranda quite often during the day. Sometimes to smell the air with the hope that it is clear enough (free of smoke) to take a walk. But I always stop awhile and listen. Summer's song is still strong...birds tweeting and singing. Occasional squirrel chitter or blue jay squawk. I tell myself to remember this in winter. My Dad became a little hard of hearing in older age and Mom always said how sorry she felt for him because he could no longer hear the songbirds singing.
Speaking of which, the Song Sparrows are ...
read moreThe rose bushes are all in bloom. This year the first blooms opening up were tinged by pink because of the cooler temperatures we had had when they were buds...low single digits overnight and staying cooler during the day.
These hardy bushes will bloom all summer and into October as I noted last fall. The bees love them too. I must look where I could purchase more of them.Sitting waiting for grandson one day, I watched the chinstrap Canada Geese stand about in parking lot puddles. It was very hot that day and they just stood there looking ...
read moreDays flying by... June already which is crazy. We broke a weather record for heat yesterday. The former high was 29C and we had it 39C (102F) here in the Ottawa Valley. That is extreme, but no humidity thankfully. We pulled the drapes and halted the outside chores.
Look at how quickly all the leaves have opened!

The title of this project file indicates it uses on point settings and the plus sign indicates that the blocks include variations of the basic Log Cabin block.
The first design above uses variations of colouring mostly, but there are some Courthouse Steps blocks amongst them.

The second design is very similar, but with eight Curved Log Cabin blocks.

Four curves in the third, but there are also Chimneys and Cornerstones.

Sixteen Curved Log Cabin variations in the one above, along with some Courthouse Steps, and basic Log Cabin in the border.

I love the last two!

It always amazes me just how some rather common block designs can be twisted and turned to create some very interesting quilt designs. The first design uses Courthouse Steps.

Just four blocks recoloured makes a more interesting overall design.

Change the colouring in eight blocks, different again.

The fourth design is very different, and I love it!

Something totally different for the last design for this week’s mid week Log Cabin display.

Not the most brilliant colour choice, but the contrast is good enough to show off the designs which is my main aim with every design.
More Log ...
read moreI declare every Sunday Pyjama Day here at the Wooden House. It is also my very slow stitching day (cross stitching) and also photo day, time to go through more of my bank of photographs and delete or save. I'm finding the older the photos, the greater my willingness to axe them.
Speaking of cross stitching, my stitchy purchase last month was a pattern called The Jack Rabbit from Cottage Garden Samplings. That link will take you to their A Year in the Woods series, a group of 12 designs featuring mostly woodland creatures. And if Rabbit goes well ...

Interesting!

This project has variations of all the familiar Log Cabin, Chimneys and Cornerstones, Courthouse Steps and Curved Log Cabins.
Can you pick them all in todays designs?

I wonder how many different combinations are possible with a few colour placement variations are possible with this collection of blocks, and I wonder how many life times would be needed to find them all … though some computer nerd may be able to set up a program, but how long would it take a human to inspect them all!!!

I can see some intriguing ideas in each and every design.

No favourite ...

Interesting shape for a bauble on a tree!
Not just any tree … it is the first of December, so Christmas will be here shortly, but it is the middle of the week, so time for a short retreat from whatever you should be doing to look at some Log Cabin designs … in Christmas colours of course.

Each year I hope to find a spare tree to decorate, and if I do I will print off a heap of Christmas themed quilt designs and hang them on it!

On second thought, I should print out twice as many as required so ...
read moreNeddy walked, fire made, coffee being sipped....everything tickety boo here at the wooden house this November Sunday morning.
It's been rainy and misty down at the little pond with icy edges lately. Last year's photo but ditto for this morning's walk.
We are rewatching The Sopranos and enjoying it very much. Last night's episode got me thinking. In that one, Tony is convincing his mother( played by the wonderful Nancy Marchand) to move into a facility for old folks...he is careful to not call it a home but a retirement village. Several times he brings up her age,70, as if that is reason enough to be living in such surroundings. The reality is that she is showing signs of early dementia and is really not safe on her own anymore.
It made me think of people I knew ... read moreNovember feels a little like March as a month to me. Here in Canada they're kind of marker months that just hold time between months with celebrations, etc. Maybe I feel like that because in school we would have the fun of Halloween then time in between, November, before beginning the build up to the main event of Christmas. Celebrating these events with children during the school year is just the best feeling in the world and made the hard work of keeping up and matching the energy so worthwhile.
But for just now, next up on my agenda ...
read moreSo are you ready for the Trick and Treaters? Have you bought the little bars or bags of chips? We don't get any little folk down our laneway but I always buy one of those boxes of tiny bars just in case. You know who winds up eating the chocolate.
Most welcome in the garden. This pretty bloom has the unlikely name of Toad Lily. It made a very late appearance in the garden blooming in late September and was sustained because of the humidity of the first two weeks of October.
